How can outdoor learning and diverse learning environments support inclusion, accessibility and wellbeing?
This Erasmus+ course introduces participants to the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and explores how classrooms can be extended into outdoor spaces, nature and other inspiring learning environments.
During the course, participants will discover how diverse learning environments can support equity, differentiation and inclusion. The course also offers new perspectives on environmental education, sustainability competences, experiential learning and nature-based wellbeing.
The course is designed for teachers, special needs teachers, teacher educators and pedagogical developers working in basic education.
What will you learn?
During this course, you will deepen your understanding of inclusion and learn how diverse learning environments can support equity and participation. You will become familiar with the key principles of UDL and explore practical methods for outdoor learning and differentiation.
You will also gain inspiration for using nature as a source of balance, wellbeing and learning.
Course content
The course focuses on Universal Design for Learning, inclusion, differentiation, accessibility, environmental education and sustainability competences. Nature is explored both as a learning environment and as a co-teacher.
The programme includes lectures, workshops, study visits, a digital learning diary and a final exercise. Possible study visits include Finnish Nature Centre Haltia and Heureka Science Centre. Please note that entrance fees may apply.
Course trainers
Ulla Myllyniemi is an outdoor education expert and environmental education specialist at SYKLI Environmental College. She is a class teacher, special needs teacher, trainer and lecturer with extensive experience in outdoor and environmental education, inclusive pedagogy and teacher training.
Katariina Mustonen is a special needs teacher and qualified principal. She has nearly 20 years of experience teaching teenagers, teachers and school staff. She specialises in pedagogy, inclusion and educational equity.
Training institution
SYKLI Environmental College is a national specialist vocational college in Finland. We train professionals in different sectors to take concrete steps towards sustainability.
In Finland, SYKLI is known as a pioneer in environmental and sustainability education. Our aim is to build green competencies and improve the quality of sustainability education at all levels of the education system and throughout society.
Course fee
The course fee depends on the duration of participation and whether the participant’s organisation has an Erasmus+ grant.
For participants with an Erasmus+ grant, the course fee is 80 € per day:
- 3-day course: 240 €
- 5-day course: 400 €
- 7-day course: 560 €
For other participants, the course fees are:
- 3-day course: 330 € + VAT 25.5 %
- 5-day course: 490 € + VAT 25.5 %
- 7-day course: 650 € + VAT 25.5 %
The course fee includes training, training venues, coffee breaks and certificates. The fee does not include accommodation, meals, entrance fees to learning environments, local transportation or mobility during the training.
If you have applied for an Erasmus+ mobility grant for fewer learning days, please let us know. We will invoice you according to your participation.
